A conservative 2025 estimate, federal only, assuming the standard deduction and no other income. Your actual tax can be lower after credits and deductions like QBI. State tax is separate. We’ll dial in your real number.

1099 income is taxed in two layers: self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare, and regular income tax on what’s left. Because nothing is withheld for you, the whole bill lands at once unless you plan for it — which is why setting aside a slice of every payment makes such a difference.

This estimate is intentionally conservative and federal-only. Your real number depends on your deductions, credits, state, and any other income — all the things we sort out when we prepare your return.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much tax will I owe on 1099 income?

It's the sum of two things: self-employment tax (Social Security and Medicare, 15.3% on 92.35% of your profit) and regular federal income tax on what's left after the standard deduction. This calculator adds both for a conservative estimate.

How much should I set aside for taxes from 1099 work?

Many self-employed people set aside roughly 25–35% of their net income, but it depends on your total income and filing status. The calculator gives you a personalized percentage to aim for.

Does this include state taxes?

No — this is a federal estimate. Most states also tax income, and a few don't. We factor your state in when we prepare your actual return.

Why do I owe more than a friend with a W-2 salary?

Because no one withholds tax from your 1099 pay, and you owe self-employment tax that a W-2 employee splits with their employer. The flip side is you can deduct business expenses they can't.
